A Glorious Moment in the History of Germany

Recently, Google paid a tribute to one of the most glorious moments in the history of Germany by means of a well-thought and remarkable doodle. This event was none other than the fall of the Berlin Wall. From 1961 to 1989, this barrier which was erected by the German Democratic Republic, separated East Germany from West Germany. The main cause for the creation of this wall was for the purpose of separating a Socialist East Germany from the Capitalist Western Part. Post the Second World War, this separation came into existence and later on, this wall was coined as the ‘wall of shame’ by the erstwhile German Mayor Willy Brandt. This wall was in fact symbolic of the Iron Curtain that separated Western Europe from the Communist States of Eastern Europe.

Fall of the Berlin Wall

Towards the late 1980s, the power of the former Soviet Union over the Eastern Bloc started staggering, and countries like Poland and Hungary witnessed the downfall of the communist governments. There was a great amount of unrest within Germany as well, and many political figures were in the favor of the dissolution of the Berlin Wall, which hampered freedom of movement within the country. Protest movements started off from 1989 onwards, and in November 1989, the government allowed movement of citizens between East Germany and West Germany. Finally on 3 October 1990, the process of the German unification was complete with the fall of the wall.

ORIGIN OF THE CURRYWURST IN GERMANY

If you ever happen to visit Germany, you will come across a peculiar fusion sausage-based fast food that can only be found here. Known as Currywurst, this extremely popular German Fast Food comprises of traditional German pork sausages known as Knackwurst, which is steamed and then fried, usually after cutting into slices. This steamed and fried sausage is then served along with a spicy curry ketchup, which is in fact tomato ketchup or tomato sauce, spiked with spicy curry powder. The most popular accompaniment served along with Currywurst is French Fries, which are known as Pommes Frites.

How the concept evolved
The origin of Currywurst came into being in 1949 after the invading British troops had brought along with them Curry Powder and Worcestershire sauce in 1945. It was Herta Heuwer who used these ingredients skillfully, came up with this sumptuous snack, opened a fast food restaurant in Berlin and started serving it. Needless to say, the dish became an instant hit, and till date it can be found in all restaurants, fast food outlets and vendor stalls in the country, particularly in the capital city of Berlin. In order to commemorate the 100th birthday of Herta Heuwer, Google dedicated a doodle in her honor on June 30th, 2013.

Austria takes steps to promote its version of German language

Austria is planning to ward off the invasion of German language in the country and preserve its Austrian form. Recently, government announced a step to conserve the Austrian version of German language in order to stop the encroachment of words and texts from the neighbouring country, Germany. Austria and Germany like Britain and US are known to share a common language. While Germans and Austrians understand each other, there are some words in Austrian German which are completely different when used in German language.

In Austria, every media including online and offline is frequently dubbed or produced in German language due to which people are not able to grasp their own version of German language in Austria. As a result of this, the expressions and peculiarities of the Austrian German are slowly dying.
When Austria joined European Union in 1995, it insisted to give protected status to its version of language.

In past it seems like Government has done enough to prevent words and expressions being transferred from border. According to some of the linguistic experts, the Austrian version of German is only a local dialect in the country without any individual identity.
However with the new initiatives, government is encouraging its natives to use this language more. In schools, children and teachers are being encouraged to use Austrian version of German language instead of German.

English to German language translation: Some tips

Do you get confused when translating English into German language? If yes, then after reading this blog, you won’t have to be. The reason is perhaps you are making some of the most common mistakes which German translators generally do.So, here are some tips which can help you to translate English into German language:

•Plan it right: German is one of the languages which have complexities related to word-order. In English it is generally from left to write but it does not necessarily work with German language. Hence if you approach English to German translations with a linear approach, you may end up in producing wrong translations.

•Look for verbs: In German translations, you must look for verbs. You must always keep in mind about who does the action described in verbs. In addition to this, you must also look for other parts of speech listed in the German text or document.

•Learn nouns with genders: German unlike English is a language of gender. In German translations you should be knowledgeable about the nouns and their genders. For example, not knowing what is ‘der’, ‘die’, ‘das’ will show you as ignorant and illiterate in German language. Moreover, you need to learn the case endings used in German language. All this comes by proper learning. If you will not have the knowledge about gender of a noun, you cannot identify case.

•Keep practicing: There is no shortcut to training and practice when it comes to learning any second language. When you practice you learn many small things peculiar to German language. So,with more practice you gain more command over this language.

In addition to the above tips, it is important to know that German has its own set of rules for grammar and pronunciation. In nutshell, the more you perform the more you gain.

Knowing a second language can have positive effects on your brain

Learning a new language can have positive impact on brain. This has been studied by the University of Edinburgh and published in Annals of Neurology. In this study, scientists found that learning a new language can create positive impact on brain even if it is taken up in adulthood. So, now you can learn French, German, Russian or any other language not just for any other benefit but for your strong memory!

This study was done on 262 people aged 11 or in their seventies. Scientists found that the reading and intelligence were strongly in the people who were bilingual. The findings of this study suggest that people who acquire a second language in their life, even if in their later stages, it may benefit them in slowing down their brain-aging process. This research raised several more questions though such as whether learning a new language can have positive effect on the cognitive decline in old age and whether fluency in language is better than just knowing it. Cognitive decline is experienced by people as they age with time. All aging people develop some amount of cognitive decline as they age in their life-time. It has been confirmed through studies that cognitive decline is due to the deterioration of the ability of thinking and reasoning. It begins as the person reaches in his mid-twenties. The process of cognitive decline includes a decline in the brain volume and some other biological changes in brain.

Therefore learning a second language is going to hold you in good stead not only in your younger days but also as you put on years behind you.

Common mistakes in learning German language

German language has gained the official status in European countries and is included in among the three official languages used in European Union. German language has gained much popularity in the global world and is one of the four most learned languages of the world. In Western Europe German has been given the name as Lingua Franca as it is one of the commonly spoken languages of the natives.
German language has been included in many High school curriculum and learned by large number of people now-a-days. Learning a second language is a trend these days as there are various benefits associated with it. There are many who try to learn German with themselves and sometimes they are not able to sail through in their learning. They face several challenges which hamper their progress and consequently they are demotivated.  Here I have discussed some of the common challenges faced by people:
· German language translation:This is one of the commonly made mistakes of the people. They translate words in German language while thinking in their native language. They should think in German language without translating their mother-tongue.
· Gender differentiation: This is the second most common mistakes done by people in language learning. Not able to differentiate gender while speaking in German can lead to embarrassment. So one should differentiate gender for all nouns used in German language.
· Sentence formation: One of the major barriers in German language learning is sentence structure. German, unlike other languages places subject differently depending upon the situation.
· Misuse of prepositions: This is one of the major mistakes which can be spotted by a native German speaker. For example in German ‘for’ is replaced by ‘against’ in some sentences.
· Umlaut usage: For beginners, the usage of Umlauts is worst nightmare.  Umlauts are used only with A, O and U so you should always give attention on these letters in German language. The usage of Umlauts makes meanings of the words entirely different.

Learning any new language is difficult and it can get trickier if you don’t know the rules. Simple things like capitalization of nouns, use of preposition plays importance in German learning.

Thirteen words misinterpreted by Germans as English

There are many English words in German language which has different meanings. This creates of confusion among native English speakers. Let us look some of these interesting words:

Handy’- This is one of the best examples of an English word used by Germans in entirely different way. In English, handy implies something which is convenient. However, when used by Germans, handy means a cell phone. How interesting! So let us form sentences. A cell phone can be handy for English speakers while it cannot be quite handy in case of Germans who try to buy it in UK- which is an English speaking country.

Smoking’- Don’t be surprised if a German asks you to dress in a smoking. In German, smoking means tuxedo which is an old English jacket.

Show master’- In German language, the word show master implies a TV host and not a ringmaster in circus. This word was introduced by a Dutch show master, Rudi who was a famous TV host in Germany. Likewise Germans have invented words like Talk master and Quiz master.

Tramp’- Tramp is German means looking cheap or provocative. So, when German daughters grew up, their mother would beg them not to tramp because it was bad and they were not at all talking about hitchhiking.

Wellness’-This word can be found everywhere in Germany. It is advertised in every hotel but its use in German is different from its meaning in English. In German language, ‘wellness’ is a word which denotes saunas, steam bath and massage services offered in hotels. So next time keep an eye for the signs like ‘Wellness area’ in your German hotel.

Future of UK universities if English loses its importance in global world

UK has been blessed as an English-speaking nation since time immemorial. English is the language of the great Shakespeare, the language of science and culture of one of the most progressive people in the world.

The prosperity of UK is not only based on its distinction in scientific and cultural fields but also on its native language i.e. English. Every year lots of students enroll for various programs in UK universities. Most of the students come here to study business, management, science or engineering. While most of these students are Anglophones (those who primarily speak English) who remain in their monolingual confinement, others have become bilingual and confident skilled managers and engineers.

In UK the incentives to learn second language is rapidly declining increasing the number of Anglophones. Knowing a second language is very useful in travelling and being understood by all. In However in UK, being Anglophone is declining the ability of locals to understand culture and language of other nations. ? UK needs to take significant steps to include the study of other languages in its curriculum. Let us take one example- Chinese understand English, Germans understand English, but it does not necessary mean that English speakers understand Chinese or German language. So who is at advantage?

As a translator, you probably know how complex German to English translations can get. Translating any document or text from German to English language may involve quite a long than more than the actual process of translation. There are many more things which are needed during translation than mere physical process. Here we have created a checklist which will help you in considering important things during the process of translation.

Professional qualifications: Before taking up any translation job, you must ask yourself whether you possess the required expertise in the language pair(German-English) and whether you are aware about the regional differences in the language used. Suppose, you are translating German to English, you must take into account whether you have to use British English and US English. Technical translations in German, medical translations in German, legal translations in German require specific specialization in the subject. So before committing to such project, ask yourself whether you are OK with the jargons/terminology used in the source text.

Target audience: Check the type of your target audience, whether the translation is meant for children, native English speakers or international clients.

Purpose: Check about the purpose of translation-Whether it should be informative, persuasive, entertaining or any other purpose.

Format:  Check the format of the source text. Can you work directly on the original document? Is the file convertible? Suppose the client has given you a pdf but he wants you to provide him translations in word format, hard copy or email.

Technology: Check whether you have all the required technology for carrying out the translations. Check whether you are comfortable with the software( excel, acrobat, PowerPoint)

Integration of information:Who is your contact person? Has the client provided you all the necessary resource materials for translations? What is the deadline for the translations? Does the client want you to send translations in batches?

Rates and payments: Have you agreed on the terms of payment? Is it going to be rate-per-word? Do these rates include proof-reading and trial-runs? When will the payment made? What is the mode of payment (PayPal, direct transfer or any mode of payment)? Will it include taxes and rate fluctuations?

Legal: Have you agreed to the terms and conditions of your client and are these conducive for you? Have you been provided with the signed copy of your agreement with the client? Have you signed any confidentiality agreement? Do you have any professional insurance?

This check-list has helped me during my translation career, hope you benefit from it too!

Inseparable : Literature and their translation

In Kerala, people have read several international books in their regional language that is Malayalam. Most of them have read books from famous writers like Marquez as it is easier to get Malayalam translations of Spanish language. They often joke that Marquez is the best writer in Malayalam. Many translators in India translate novels from German to English, English to Russian, French to English, English to Italian and vice-versa.  Now-a-days, the modern novelists like Eduardo Halfon have translators working on their books despite the fact that they have been in America for several years now. However, there have always been discussions about the authenticity of translations; many say that translations never satisfy and say that it is fraud. Lately there has been a discussion on treating translated novels as a separate genre and many readers are of the view that translators are not able to translate the intended info written by the writer.

However, the truth is that writers facilitate the work of writers to reach foreign readers and without them they would have remained as an unknown name in foreign world. Writers like Chekhov, Proust, Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Kawabata, Pamuk, Neruda and other would have remained unreachable by the avid readers without the work of translators who translated their work to reach millions of population.Translation is in fact a very critical job yet translators are not given the respect and attention they deserve!

The Death of 'comma'

Recently there was news which surprised everyone! It was about the abolition of comma. An English Professor John McWhorter of Columbia University said that comma should be made redundant as it is not necessary now. This news sparked lot of discussions among literates. It has been seen that some languages such as German language, there are fixed rules for the usage of comma unlike English, which makes an additional remorseful thought for the condition of this punctuation mark.

The history of Comma

Comma was introduced as a punctuation mark in the early 16th century. It was used to show the specific meaning of the sentence/text, mainly for clarity of uncertainty which sometimes arise in particular contexts.

The redundancy of comma

Professor John says that the downfall of comma is the result of its inconsistency. In an interview with the ‘Slate’ magazine, he said that nobody can tell the reasons of anything which is logical and sensible. So they are just fashions and conventions which change over time.”

Many English users found comma extremely useful in splitting the sentences so they were not in favour of making it obsolete. Many authors such as Lynne Truss, the best-seller for her “Eats, Shoots and Leaves”, support the correct usage of comma in her writing about a panda. Comma has a useful existence in evading wrong titles, and clarifying misleading information. The discussion about killing of this humble punctuation symbol is still lingering; let us see, till when it awaits for its final dismissal from the English literature!

Goa government using website translation as marketing strategy

The small emerald island, Goa received about five lakh tourists this year and in the coming season it is expected to see some more growth in the number of tourists. The government has been taking every measure to market Goa as tourist destination in the international market. In the line of such steps, the government of Goa has now decided to translate its official website into five to six foreign languages majorly focusing on Russian, Arabic and German language translations. Presently, the official website is in English and translating it in other languages will be an important step to appeal customers from different languages and culture. Moreover if Visa-on Arrival is implemented on the Dabolim airport, it will further improve the inflow of tourists here..

According to the experts, multilingual website will bring more tourists to Goa from European countries. Presently anyone can translate the official website with the help of online tools like Google translate. However, it cannot be a permanent solution as it is not sure whether the automatic translations done by such online tools are accurate or not.

Apart from promotion of tourism, this initiative by Goa government will promote language translation services in Goa. Now-a-days many language translation agencies are operating in several cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Chennai etc. These agencies provide qualified and native Russian, Arabic, Italian and German translators. Hence this step by government has multifaceted benefits apart from creating huge impact on tourism.
